What's happening in AI and automation — and what it means for your business in Latin America. No hype, just judgment.

Anthropic launches Claude 4 and Managed Agents: frontier agents with enterprise governance

Anthropic launched the Claude 4 family (Opus 4, Sonnet 4) with leading results in programming and reasoning, and simultaneously took its Managed Agents layer out of beta — an architecture that separates the "brain" (the model) from the "hands" (the sandbox where the agent executes actions). The result: an AI agent can operate enterprise tools (CRM, ERP, email) inside a managed sandbox with explicit permissions, audit logs, and MCP connectors, all under the IT team's control.

What it means for your business: For a LATAM SME: you no longer need to build your own agent infrastructure. The big three (Google, Anthropic, OpenAI) offer managed platforms — that means price competition and a cost of implementing an AI agent that drops every quarter. The differentiator now is who designs the process well, not who has access to the model.

Platforms

Google renames Vertex AI to Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform: agents are the product

Google Cloud has rebranded Vertex AI as Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform and launched the Managed Agents API, a config-driven, REST-first interface for creating autonomous agents that reason, execute code, search the web, and operate external tools — all inside a managed sandbox. The name change is not cosmetic: it signals that the platform is no longer a model repository, but an agent factory.

What it means for your business: For a LATAM SME already using Google Cloud: building an AI agent that manages invoices or serves customers now comes down to a configuration file and an API call, with no infrastructure of your own. The barrier to entry keeps dropping.

AI agents move from demo to infrastructure: MCP consolidates as the standard

The Model Context Protocol (MCP), the open standard that lets AI agents connect with enterprise tools and data, is now supported by the leading model providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google). This means an agent can operate your CRM, your ERP, and your inbox with a standard connector instead of custom integrations.

What it means for your business: For a LATAM SME: integrations that used to cost weeks of custom development are now solved with standard connectors — the cost of implementing AI agents keeps dropping.

Regulation

EU AI Act: obligations for high-risk systems take effect in August 2026

The most demanding phase of the European AI regulation applies from August 2026 to high-risk systems. Although it is European regulation, it sets the de facto standard that regulators in Brazil, Chile, and Colombia are taking as a reference for their own AI laws.

What it means for your business: If you sell to European or corporate clients, documenting how your processes use AI stops being optional. Implementing automation with traceability from day one is cheaper than retrofitting it.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp Business: per-message pricing (not per conversation) is now the norm

Since July 2025, Meta bills template messages per delivered message instead of per conversation window, and service conversations initiated by the customer are free. Well designed, a chatbot that replies within the 24-hour window operates with near-zero messaging costs.

What it means for your business: Flow design matters more than ever: replying within the service window and minimizing marketing templates can cut your Meta bill by up to 70%.

Trends

Agentic AI tops the strategic technology trends for 2026

The major consultancies (Gartner, McKinsey, Deloitte) agree: agentic AI — systems that autonomously execute complete processes, not just answer questions — is the dominant technology trend. Only 2% of organizations have deployed it at scale, opening a window of real competitive advantage.

What it means for your business: 98% of your competitors still don't have AI agents in production. Whoever automates their key processes first sets the new cost standard for their sector.
